But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. (Mat 12:36-37)
Words hold immense power. The Bible says in Matthew 12:36-37, “But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” This passage serves as a stark reminder that our words matter—not just in this life, but in eternity.
Many times, we are careless with what we say. We let emotions dictate our speech, leading us to say words that can create negativity, hurt, and pain. Whether spoken in anger, frustration, or thoughtlessness, these words can cause deep wounds, not only to others but also to ourselves.
The Spiritual Weight of Our Words
The consequences of our speech go beyond the physical realm. As Jesus clearly states, every word we speak will be accounted for on the day of judgment. This means that what we say has the potential to justify us or condemn us. Our words are not mere sounds; they carry spiritual weight and can shape our future, even affecting our eternal destiny.
The tongue, though small, wields great influence. James 3:5 reminds us, “Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.” Careless, idle words can set our lives ablaze with strife and regret, both for ourselves and for others.
The Creative Power of Speech
On the flip side, words also have incredible creative power. Just as God spoke the world into existence by words, our words can create and recreate, it can bring life to situations that seem lifeless. When we speak with intention and purpose, especially in line with God’s will, we align ourselves with the highest force of creation, and our words have power.

In precarious situations, it takes wisdom to control our tongue. The ability to speak words of life and truth, even in moments of trial, is a reflection of maturity and faith. When we are mindful of our words, we have the power to build up rather than tear down. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Therefore, it is crucial to fill our words with wisdom, love, and encouragement.
Breaking the Power of Negative Words
Just as we speak to others, it is essential to recognize when negative words have been spoken over us or when we have unknowingly cursed our own lives through careless speech. These words can create spiritual blockages, hinder our prayers and blessings as well as destroy our progress and purpose. However, the good news is that we have the authority through Christ to break and nullify every negative word we have spoken to other ad ourselves and every negative words others have spoken over our lives.
A Prayer for Breaking Idle and Negative Words:
Heavenly Father, I come before You acknowledging the power of my words and the weight they carry in the spiritual realm. I repent for every idle word I have spoken without considering its impact. Please forgive me and cleanse me from the consequences of these words.
Lord, I declare that from this moment forward, my words will be filled with wisdom, love, and encouragement. Lord, I pray that every word that proceeds from my mouth be pleasing to You and bring life, grace, and edification to those who hear them in the name of Jesus.
IN the name of Jesus, I break and nullify every negative word that has been spoken against me or my loved ones. I cancel their effects and render them powerless in the name of Jesus. Let Your truth and blessings replace every curse or harmful word spoken over our lives in Jesus' name.
In Jesus' mighty name, I pray. Amen.
Conclusion
The words we speak have lasting consequences—both in this life and the life to come. As mothers, fathers, and believers in Christ, we are called to use our words carefully and intentionally, always seeking God’s will for ourselves and others. By breaking the chains of careless and idle words, we align ourselves with God’s purpose and speak life into every situation we face.
